Orange Bitters

A unique blend of six herbal extracts, perfectly balanced for optimal effect. Our Orange Bitters contain the following herbs:

Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium)

Made from bitter orange peel, warming and distinctive flavour. Used as a warming digestive bitter to improve digestion and absorption. Is also an expectorant, loosening mucus, and a mild diuretic. Mild anti-depressant.

Gentian Root (Gentiana lutea)

A classic tonic bitter. Like most bitters, is a liver and pancreatic stimulant. Increases gastric juices and increases appetite. On its own it helps to allay sugar cravings. Also used for treating anxiety and mild depression.

Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare)

Can be either sweet or bitter depending on the balance of its two main volatile oils, fencone (bitter) and anethole(sweet) - which gives it a characteristic aniseed tang. We use sweet fennel in this blend. Digestive carminative for gas and bloating. Also lifts the spirits.

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthum)

Used since the beginning of time as a classic bitter. Wormwood is a prime constituent of vermouth (in German wermuth = wormwood). It is a cooling bitter, used for poor digestion, liver and gall bladder congestion, and also has mild psychotropic qualities, for taking away the blues - which probably accounts for its popularity.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

A sweet and evocative aroma combining eucalyptus, camphor, and lemon notes. Same plant family as Ginger. A digestive stimulant, specifically used for weak and cold digestion. Helps to settle bloating and flatulence. Mild anti-depressant, helps to clear the head, especially with stress headaches.

Juniper Berry (Juniperis communis)

Contains volatile oils and tannins, adding a distinctive flavour and dryness when mixed. Therapeutically used as an urinary antiseptic and diuretic. This is quite a potent herb and is used in small doses.
