Hamamelis virginiana, organic grain alcohol

External use is generally very well tolerated with only rare allergic or skin sensitivity reactions.

Only use externally or as a gargle, unless directed by a herbalist due to the high tannin content. 

Particularly avoid internal use during pregnancy.

Common name: Witch Hazel

Family: Hamamelidaceae

Part used: Leaf, bark

Habitat:

Constituents: Tannins (3-10%), flavonoids (leaf) including quercetin, kaempferol, volatile oils (approx 5%)

Actions: Astringent

  • Styptic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-haemorrhagic

Traditional and current uses:

  • Varicose veins, haemorrhoids, phlebitis, poor venous tone
  • Acne, stings and bites
  • Inflamed gums and pharyngitis (gargle)
  • Wet eczema
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Inflamed weeping skin and minor wounds
  • Distilled witch hazel water is useful for post partum sore bits
